DIY Elephant Clocks

Another look into my secret baby board:

via
I have this friend named Julie, she is pretty awesome. She cooks for us more than I do, she brought me ketchup flavored Pringles from Germany, she loves Harry Potter, and she is generally really cool. Julie is expecting a baby boy in October and I knew it was time for me to pay it forward. Or I guess pay it back. A while ago she found an adorable elephant lamp that would have matched her nursery perfectly, the down side was that it ran at about $50.00. Right, ok, college students have enough room in their budget to drop that kind of money on a lamp.

After she told me about the lamp I pulled up a picture of this elephant clock, which is adorable and amazing, but also runs at about $50.00. Not in the budget. But as I said above, Julie is amazing and I basically owe her my life, so I knew I needed to make some magic happen.

After thinking about it for a few days I had a plan. My parents own a small scroll saw, I have access to paint and a craft store to buy hands for a clock, I could make this happen.

This idea came to me about two months ago, so naturally I didn't start working on it until the day before the baby shower. Some things never change. Luckily my parents/husband are awesome and the gave me some serious help. My dad drew out a version of the elephant on some extra wood he had, Spencer did most of the cutting, and various friends/old bosses helped with the paint, vinyl letters, and clock hands.

I'm super proud of how it all turned out, and by how much money was saved by making it myself! So many times I feel like making things yourself is more work than it's worth, while in reality that has never been true for me. I love making my own things because they are so much more personal. They're usually not perfect, but that's what makes them yours. I'm so grateful to have so many amazing resources! It was one of those times when I realized how lucky I am to have lived in one place so long. I could never call up an old boss or use my parents for help if we lived somewhere else. I totally take that for granted, and I have to keep reminding myself that we won't be here for forever!

Anyway, returning to what we're talking about, here are pictures of the process!

At this point we lose a few steps of documentation because I may or may not have dropped my phone in the toilet . . . whoops! It's ok though, here's what you missed: I surreptitiously asked Julie what color she would want a new baby room decoration to be, then went to Hobby Lobby for paint and the clock parts. I just got enamel craft paint, it worked perfectly. Then I called my old boss and asked if he would be willing to print some vinyl for me. What a blessed resource. I typed up the numbers (font: MFT Toast) and got them in matte white. I didn't actually put the whole thing together until after I gave it to her at her shower. I wanted her to see the color and make sure she liked it before I put the vinyl on. I made my dad/Spencer do the math and use the protractor to figure out where the numbers went. The less math I have to do the better.

:) Happiness. May baby Tennyson love it as much as I do.

Sharing the Love

Remember when I told you that I have a private baby board so people don't assume I'm expecting? Yeah. Well I also have a board called "secrets" where I post all of the beautiful things I don't want other people stealing. I'm selfish, it's fine.

When I see a truly amazing craft or something that I really love it goes onto the secret board. I also put things there if I am more than 95% positive that I am actually going to do them. I don't want people to see the craft I did and think it's lame cause they already saw a better version on pinterest.

This morning I came across the most beautiful fabric site I have ever encountered, and I immediately pinned it to the secrets board. However, the fabric selection was so beautiful and so perfect that I just couldn't keep it to myself, so I am sharing it with you.

They have hundreds of patterns and they also come in wallpaper, decals, and wrapping paper. It's ok to cry, things this perfect rarely come along, and when they do they need to be properly celebrated.

Tell me you aren't dying over the whale fabric. IMAGINE HOW PERFECT IT WOULD BE ON A PILLOW!!!!!!

Ok I'm done now.

Pantry Makeover 101

We love our apartment, but here's the thing: I've had classrooms that were bigger than our home. I'm not talking 250 seating capacity lecture halls, I'm talking third grade elementary school classrooms. It's not like we need a ton of space, it's just that we've had to get a little creative with storage options.

Exhibit A: our "pantry." There's a pretty flimsy bookcase that I inherited from an apartment over two years ago that has followed me as I've moved. It has taken on many roles over the years, the most recent being that of our pantry.

There's no way around it: this is not a pretty bookcase. It's got holes drilled in the back, it's starting to come apart in places, and it's a super boring light oak color. Rough. So, me being me, I had to do something about it. I had many ideas, most of which included painting, but then I looked up the steps to painting laminate. You guys, they expect you to leave the primer on for seven days before painting. Seven days. Yeah, because I have that kind of patience. Not to mention, this isn't some prized possession passed down through generations that I intend on keeping until the day I die. This is a 45 dollar Ikea purchase passed form one college apartment to another, and it probably won't be making our next move with us.

That being said, I wanted to do something for this little bookcase that wouldn't be too much of an investment in the actual case, but more of a long-term home/pantry investment. The results:

Yeah, I took these pictures with my phone. Judge on.
I started by measuring the depth and width of the selves and doing a quick inventory of the pantry so I had an idea of how many baskets we would need. Then we headed over to Hobby Lobby to get wicker baskets and spray paint.

True, Pinterest gave me a few unrealistic expectations for this project, but I'm quite proud of our little makeover. The thing about a small apartment is that when one thing is dirty, the entire apartment is dirty. It's not like the mess is contained in just the kitchen or just the living room, the kitchen is the same as the living room so the mess is everywhere. Having this little added measure of organization makes the entire apartment seem more organized, and we love it.

Five steps to having a great day

Here's the thing: I try really hard not to sell myself short in my blogging. I try to find things to talk about that will leave people laughing, nodding their heads, or at the very least reading until the end of the post. I want people to be like, "sweet, Sadie blogged. This is gonna be good." I mean, duh. I think that's everyone's goal. But what I'm saying here is that I try to avoid fluff posting just to say I posted. I wanna make sure that I'm blogging because I have something to say, not because I want to up my followers. In this quest, I have tried to steer clear of posts like this:

Five steps to having a great day:

1. Start the night before by going to bed 15 minutes early.
This way you have time to meditate about the previous day and get rid of all your negative energy.

2. Leave time in the morning to give yourself a facial.
If you take the time to pamper yourself, the world will take time to pamper you.

3. Think positively.
The best way to do this is to stop yourself before having a negative though, and think of five positive things instead. You'll be amazed at the difference!

4. Ignore the haters.
Remember that not everyone is as determined to have a great day as you are. Don't let anyone rain on your parade.

5. Vomit rainbows.
This way the world will know you are out to have a good time.

Of course this post would be accompanied by a picture of myself twirling in a field with some "yay happiness!" quote on it to ensure that the post ended up on Pinterest. Yeah, I went there. We know what you're up to, other bloggers, we know.

The issue with this goal of mine is that I sometimes find myself stuck in long periods of life when I don't find my thoughts to be blog worthy, and at these times it's really hard not to turn to pinterest-made self-improvement lists.

In reality, I think I'm going through a blog identity crisis. Every time you read a list of "10 things to do to up your followers" the list tells you to find what you want to blog about and stick with it. DIY-ing? Great. Food? Go for it. Fashion? Werk it. But you guys, I don't have one thing that I like to blog about. If I happen to make some awesome food or I do something awesome with my apartment and I want to share it then I do. If I have a thought come to mind that I feel like sharing than I do. The issue is that I feel like successful bloggers who blog about similar things as me seem to fall back on the pinterest post regularly. And it's frustrating. That's all I'm trying to say.

My top 5 favorite Pinterest meals

Hi. So I'm not like, a foodie, or whatever, but I do like food. The issue is that I hate to cook. There was one time when Spencer and I found a recipe that looked amazing so we went to the store and got all the ingredients, but when we came home and started trying to make it the first direction was to "score and blanch the tomatoes." We looked at each other for a moment before Spencer said, "so, mac and cheese?" I will know I have made it in the cooking world when I know what it means to score and blanch.

Until then, however, my goal with finding food on Pinterest has been finding things that are both easy and tasty. I now present to you my top five favorites.

Pinterest babies

My favorite thing to do on pinterest is look at baby things. Bedrooms, stuffed animals, outfits, shoes. I could scroll through hundreds of baby boards and only get happier with each scroll. It's becoming an issue.

I myself have a beautiful board dedicated solely to baby, but I made it private so that people don't wonder if I'm pregnant. They get curious enough when I mention not feeling well or smelling something they haven't smelled yet. No need to further their suspicions.

The issue is that sometimes I actually feel sorry for my followers. How sad they would be if they knew the beautiful things I am pinning that they will never see.

So, out of generosity, I have decided to share a few of my favorite baby pins. Please know that picking favorites is the hardest thing I have ever done.
