We sell Mike and Ikes in the bookstore. No big deal. Expect for lately I noticed that someone had taken a sharpie to one of the boxes and crossed out Mike's name. Poor Mike.
But the more I walked past the candy counter I began to realize that it wasn't just one box, it turned out each box had either Mike or Ike crossed out, like so:
And so I was like, what? Mike and Ike are real people? Are they brothers? Who would name their children Mike and Ike? Asking for it. And for real, these brothers started a candy company and now they are splitting? Is there not something about sibling rivalry in the contract? This has got to be for advertising.
Turns out I was right, but I gotta be honest with you, I think it's the worst thing ever. For one, I noticed this probably like two months ago, and it wasn't until this morning that I finally googled it, and that is only because I needed something to say on this blog of mine.
After some light research I have come to discover that the split is for the purpose of capturing a younger audience. What? You sell candy, you have a young audience. What does this say about the rising generation? Causing drama is the only way to get their attention? Is that what TomKat is doing? Let's be real, when was the last time you saw either of them in the tabloids pre-split? Is the whole world pulling a Paris and Nicole?
The drama behind the break is that mike was dedicating too much time to his music and Ike was obsessed with his graffiti. Which is cool, except for that Mike and Ike aren't actually real people. Turns out no one even knows where the name originated from.
So you're telling me that the company decided to break up imaginary friends, a $15 million ad campaign, just to get the attention of the rising generation? Couldn't you just switch up the box design or ad a new flavor? Maybe throw some commercials on daytime television?
But when it comes down to it I know nothing about advertising or business, so they probably know what they're doing. Who knows, maybe now is the time to invest in some Mike and Ike stock. Sources say they are looking to double their business.
All because of an imaginary breakup. What is this world coming to?

I'm so glad you googled this for me. But like... what do they want us to start calling them "Ikes" now? Right, like that's gonna happen.
ReplyDeleteI've seen boxes that have Ikes name crossed out as well... so I don't think this is a permanent thing. I thinks its a ploy to get us interested and want to buy more, even though we don't really know the purpose and don't really buy more candy thereof.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have Mike and Ikes in the UK, I'd never heard of them until I came across your blog.
ReplyDeleteI think they've done it to get people talking - leading to more publicity and it's definitely working : )
I was going to say "I couldn't care less" but then I realized I could. I could care so little that I didn't even bother writing a comment. So I guess I care just barely enou
