Haters Gonna Hate

You know what I hate? Utah haters.

Let's be real, we all know at least three.

Those who fall in this category have at least two things in common: they are primarily from the west coast, usually California, and, well, they hate Utah and everything about it.

The first thing I want to say to these people is Why Are You Here?!?!?!?! Seriously, who made you come to school in Utah? BYU has a Hawaii location, have you checked it out?

The second thing I would like to bring up is, really? Are you going to spend your four years of college hatin' on the place you live? That's a great way to foster positive energy.

I was discussing this matter with a friend just a few days ago, and he told me of a run-in he had while waiting to give blood. He turned to start a conversation with the girl next to him and it went something like this:

"Where are you from?"
"California. You?"
"Utah."
"Ugh, I hate Utah."

What?? Why would you even say that? That's like saying "I have a little boy named Jackson." "Ugh, I hate little boys named Jackson." Thank you for blatantly stating to my face that you have automatically stereotyped me without going any further than learning where I grew up, cause that is definitely the only deciding factor in my personality.

Over my three years of college I've gotten pretty used to this, but it hit a new level the other day at my ward FHE.

Person: "Where are you from?"
Sadie: "Orem."
Person: "Oh, I'm sorry."
Sadie: "I'm not."
Person: "Well you should be."

.....

It took all I had not to retort. Well, no, that's a lie. I'm not really a confrontational kinda person and I never think of things to say in the moment, so I usually just let my frustration fester until I unleash it in a blog post.

But seriously, does this bother anyone else?

  1. Yes! It really bothers me! And excuse me while I step on my soap box but i just have to add to what you said. They don't usually hate Utah but rather the fact that there are so many Momrmons in Utah. They think that the Utah Mormons are hypicritcal and judgemental. But the bottom line is there are hypicritcal and judgemental Mormons all over the world. And Utah has more Mormons per capita than the rest of the world. So it only makes sense that there are more hypicritical and judgemental Momrmons in Utah becuase there are more Mormons in Utah all together! I know for a fact there are those types of Mormons in which ever state they grew up in! And seriously, if you don't like Mormons then why did you come to BYU?

  2. As a person from California, I would like to say that I disliked Utah for the sake of disliking Utah. A lot of people from "Cali" have some weird complex. I don't know where it comes from.
But I'm starting to love Utah, and actually told myself the other day that I wouldn't mind living here when I'm married. *gasp*
    :)
