A best friend is the best person to play catch phrase with because they can say something like "Your name!" and you know that the word they are trying to describe is "Llama." They are someone who your mom doesn't have to ask to stay for dinner, but just sets a place at the table, and then spends the meal time sharing glances and fighting back laughter when your parents make less-than-normal comments. A best friend will eat unidentifiable pink desserts, and would drive to Idaho for french fries just to spend the time with you. Even if they can't talk, a best friend will call you at 11:11 and hang up quickly, just so you remember to make a wish. They will have the patience to explain a fire hydrant to you, and then laugh at your stupidity. A best friend will bring you cinnamon bears at work when they know you have a long shift, and they will be so excited to write a message on your car window that they will forget to make sure the car is yours.
A best friend shares a brain channel with you, so they know what you need and when you need it. They can tell when you are about to cry, and they know the words that can fix it. When you are feeling bitter and mad they will make you laugh, and they will save you from the situations that are just too much to handle.
A best friend will find a way to stay in your mind, even during times apart.
When you are happy, or sad, or hurt, or excited, or bitter, or overjoyed, a best friend is the person who comes to mind first.
And when you can't talk to a best friend, something about life seems just a little bit off. There are words and feelings and other such things that cannot be fully expressed to anyone else, and they build up inside of you until there is no room left.
